Sebastian's Fantasy Novels

Short Stories:

Avenging Angel: Winner, First Place in the official Planescape Third Edition 'After the War' Contest! (Brag, brag) :) A story set in war-torn Sigil. A fallen celestial has a mission of vengeance...

Adventures of Hector Vail:

The Adventure of the Twice-Dead Man: A Ravenloft short story, patterned after the classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Hector Vail and his associate Col. Oliver Pendleton must solve a horrifying and unearthly crime... This is the first of the series (more to come) The Mystery of the Scornful Lover: The second Ravenloft short story in the series. Hector Vail and Col. Pendleton must unravel a ghostly mystery... The Case of the Vanished Woman: The third Ravenloft mystery in the series. Vail and Pendleton must match wits with a deadly and malevolent mind... The Bizarre Clue of the Agony Column: Ravenloft's 'other' Great Detective sends an urgent request for Vail's aid... The Secret of Berth Twenty-Nine: Vail and Pendleton come face to face with the horrifying secret of berth 29... The Enigma of the Hanged Countess: Inspector Lambert calls on Vail to solve the grisly murder of a foreign dignitary...

Novellas:

Lionheart: The Unseen Saboteur: A spelljammer novelette set aboard the fantastic Lionheart station, headquarters of the Imperial Elven Fleet. High Captain Reanyn Al'Nuoth has been recalled from the field of battle and presented with an impossible task. Now he must choose between Duty and Honor. (Although this story may be seen as a prequal to 'Tale of the Wayfarer' it is stylistically more similar to 'A Few Good Men', 'Crimson Tide', or 'Courage Under Fire') Strength of the Blade: A Dark Sun novellette, not yet finished, centered on the adventure of one disciple of the psionic arts... Niles and the Minton Bird: A lighthearted Planescape short story based on a takeoff of P.G. Wodehouse's 'Wooster and Jeeves' series. Hilary Woodshem has gotten himself into a royal mess, and it's up to his faithful servant Niles to get him out... Refuge of the Damned: A very different project, a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid short story set in a dark universe of my own design. This is definite science-fiction, but the characters and style have their origins in Robert Howard's immortal Conan stories

Novels In Progress:

Tide of Darkness: The Icon has been taken, stolen by demons from the worlds beyond. Gwydion, a paladin (and a prime), dares to accept an epic quest to retrieve it in this adventure set in the Planescape multiverse. Tale of the Wayfarer: Who is the mysterious Raver? Twilight Jack and the Wayfarer are on his trail, in this fast-paced adventure set in the Spelljammer universe. The hunt is on... Angel of Death: The tragic tale of Artemis Entreri, and how he came to become the most lethal assassin the Forgotten Realms have ever known Vengeance: A new novel set in the fantasy world of Greyhawk. Warning! This story is very different from my others. The setting is brutal, the world is rife with evil. This caused a minor stir when I posted it to the Greyhawk mailing list, and generated more positive (and some negative) fanmail than any other story I've done to date (for the first post).

Various and Sundry Reviews:

I thought I'd put up a page with a few of the reviews I've gotten for my stories. Likely if you follow one or more of my novels you'll recognize one of the quotes as your own. But if you've never read any of my stuff and you're just seeing my page for the first time, you might want a second opinion before you plunge in.

By the way, all of this is culled from private messages to me and I really don't have permission from anybody to do this, so I've kept it all anonymous. If you see one of your quotes and you don't want it to have it displayed for all the world to see, just let me know and I'll take it down. This page isn't intended as a tribute to my vanity (well, not completely :) but rather as a guide for the uninitiated. And I thought regular readers might want to see what other regular readers have said... Plus I really do value the compliments I get; when I'm feeling a little depressed I like to look at them, they get me motivated to write again, and having a lot of the best of them on a single page is easier.

So here goes, in no particular order:

Tide of Darkness:

"What a great story! A paladin who doesn't know he's a paladin or realize he can use priest magic - what a great concept! And I love the way he's so humble and un-self righteous... Tap is great, the riddles are very cool... I don't trust Brianna, not one bit... can't wait for more..."

"works very well on all levels - story, characters, richness of detail in the setting... I'll reserve my opinion until the end, but so far I think this is the best planescape story I've ever seen, TSR or otherwise... just wish the chapters would come quicker..." (this is one of two 'better than TSR' letters - the second was for the spelljammer novel - so I don't get this opinion often, but I do indeed find it flattering)

"I love Gwydion... thought he was too nice to survive the planes, but then it turns out he's one heck of a fighter, too... the battle scenes are pretty good, believable yet fast-paced... are you anything like him? I'd love to be in Brianna's shoes (I have a theory they're going to end up together; anyway I think there's some romantic tension)..." (sure, for those who don't know, there really are girls that like fantasy out there; it isn't just a myth. :) I'm glad some of my stories are appealing to them too)

"particularly liked the opening scene with the cambion, looking forward to seeing how that plays into the rest of the story. Your description of the carnage in the valley and the Citadel of Drowned Souls - very good... I like the paladin (if that's what he is) though I'd like to know more of his homeworld. He seems so simple at first, but then you start to see hidden intricacies..."

"I like Tap a lot, but I think there's more than meets the eye there... he can't be just a boy, can he? I think it's written so that the reader will think Brianna's up to something, but I've got my eye on Tap. Great scenes with Dima 'what a pretty little duckling he is' At once it revealed her character and also told us a bit more about Gwydion... keep up the good work..."

"Wow, pretty cool story. Unfortunately I haven't got any of the earlier chapters (I be new and green).Could you *please* send me all your earlier chapters so I can get the plot?"

"This is a very interesting novel so far, something which could easily serve as an introduction story to the planes, for one of the 'Clueless' to the campaign. Engrossing, with a character that seems open and honest, but leaving room for much character development... I like the twists and turns in the story... I look forward to future chapters."

"Just wondering..when are u releasing the next chapter? :) Love it so far, keep up the good work"

"so far... I like it.Tell you what I think about it later... good luck with the book!"

The Adventures of Hector Vail:

(The Hector Vail stories are the most difficult to write; that's why it takes me longer to produce them. I loved A.C. Doyle's 'Sherlock Holmes' and I've read all 56 short stories and all 4 novels that he wrote. However, other than that I don't generally read a lot of mysteries, so I didn't know how well I'd do when trying my hand at the field. Apparently with both stories so far I've managed to strike gold - as you'll see many readers are very critical of mysteries that don't 'play fair' and they generally were pleased...)

"you are a very good writer and I'd suggest trying to get these stories published in dragon or dungeon."

"I stayed up and read your second story last night.. I did indeed enjoy this next story, just as much as the first... you did plant fair-play clues again. I respected the story because it played fair... the clues were there... I love to be surprised... all in all, another great story... I also think you are a very talented writer. Last night I was looking for a book to read (yep...big reader here and yes Mysteries) when I remembered your story. So, I was up reading it till about 3 a.m. And I enjoyed it. I can't wait for the third... I think your stories would make great adventures in the Masque setting. I like the way you build the atmosphere and tension in the stories."

"Boy, this was good.I admit I made the same mistake Vail made... Undoubtedly one of the best stories not featuring (had to edit this part to avoid giving the mystery away)"

"I just read your story 'The Adventure of the Twice-Dead Man' and I loved it. I'm also a big mystery fan and I want to thank you for giving me some ideas on how to combine the classic mystery story with the gothic horror elements of Ravenloft. Good job. And may I also say well done to your planting of fair-play clues as well. A true mystery fan couldn't have asked for more. I can't wait to read the next story and I'm sure I'll look forward to your third. Thanks again for the entertainment..."

"As for the story (The Adventure of the Twice-Dead Man), I liked it very much. I hope that the author decides to do another 3 or 4 of them."

"I enjoyed it. Personally, I thought it was a vampire up until the end, I didn't even notice the bit about the box... distinctly Holmes: figuring each part of the mystery as it comes before trying to see it all as a whole... ingenious"

"Well written in the style of Holmes but for the fact that with Holmes the solution was allways mundane no matter how the facts seemed to point... Suitably bizarre... an interesting twist that showed the Investigator was willing to set aside his suspicions when contrary data produced itself. The letter, written in code.. that was a good idea"

"On the whole, the story was quite good. I like the part about one of Vail's contacts being Dr. Van Richten, and the mystery was suitably brain teasing... a cross between the Speckled Band and a ghost story, eh? Can't wait to read the next one... quite frankly I would have thought something like this was more suited for MotRD. Now I think it will work better in the Core. You've convinced me)."

"congratulations for your story. it's very good, and i'd like to see more."

"I'm finishing reading the story right now, and I really liked the letter code; I agree with Robert you did a good job in writing using a "Doylish" style." (By the way, that quote comes from Ravenloft's other Great Detective, Alanik Ray. High praise indeed)

"I just finished reading the story...great work. keep it up...maybe a serial perhaps, eh?"

Tale of the Wayfarer:

"I want to say that I'm really enjoying the Voidchaser saga. I don't have a whole lot of feedback to give, though; I'm just enjoying it too much to want to think critically. :)"

They say that you never know how appreciated you are until you're dead. I got an interesting peek at how popular this story had become when I posted chpts 20 and 21 to the SJ listserv. Somehow chpt 20 didn't come through. The resulting flood of letters I got requesting it (most from people I didn't even know were reading the story) was surprising. Here's a few:

" :) :) :) I just hope I didn't miss Chapter 20. ;)"

"Dear sir: I did not get chapter 20. I do not know why, but I would be indebted if you would send it to me privately. Thank you for your excellent story."

"Sounds to me like Twilight Jack is blocking all chapters not pretaining to him so that HE gets the spotlight and all the glory!!!:-P"

"what happened to chapter 20? did I miss it or something?"

"Could you send me chapter 20? My stupid computer missed it somehow, and I'm very anxious to read what happens next."

"Great, just great. Now I've gone and read them out of order. :) I didn't get chapter 20 somehow, could you send it? I've already read chapter 21; I couldn't wait. So I think I have some idea what must have happened..."

(Tale of the Wayfarer is very character-driven, with some bigger than life people. Naturally different readers have different favorites...)

"Twilight Jack is THE MAN! He will kick your ass! I'm scared for Reanyn and Brianna when he catches up with them; they're as good as dead if they face off with him. Thanks for the story, it's really good, but my favorite character is Twilight Jack - he's so cool! The idea of a character like that - someone who's lived for thousands of years and can't die and it's changed him so that he's no longer 'quite' human anymore... it rocks!"

"Can't believe the stereotypes you've reversed here. I'm actually feeling sorry/sympathy for goblins, for crying out loud. :) Excellent. I even found that last chapter moving. Reanyn and his crew are very sympathetic, and Tianna is becoming more so all the time. At first I found any possibility for romance between him and her very unlikely, but little by little... call me crazy but I could see them sharing a kiss somewhere down the line, maybe. Then again, maybe not. As for Twilight Jack, he's very unsympathetic to me. His adventures are interesting, but he's so soulless. I've got a feeling Reanyn's going to kill him..."

(Sometimes just the simplest letters can be flattering:)

"Ok, where do I find parts 1 - 20?"

(And of course this one caught my eye, and gave me a tremendous boost:)

"KEEP IT COMING THAT WAS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (that's all there was to it, nothing more, but as you can imagine I loved recieving it. In fact the night I got it I plunged back into writing and churned out two more chapters...)

"Wow, great story. It kept me up for two hours last night, and that's saying something, since it was already 3 am when I started! I can't wait for more chapters!" - that was the first response I ever got, and it came the day after Static posted the first four chapters on his site. Needless to say it spoiled me and gave the wrong impression as to how much feedback I'd get from internet surfers (the vast majority of the mail I get is from people on the various listservs)

"Excellent story... fast and furious, I love the characters... just keeps getting better and better. By the way, here's my theory on the secret of the Wayfarer..."

"Wish you wouldn't make us wait so long in between chapters. :) This next part was great, loved the psionic battle... and the dizanters - too cool!"

"I really wish TSR had come up with a novel like this, it might have saved the setting... your work rivals that of some of my favorite authors... Great story, very exciting... I'm really into it, I hope you send more chapters soon." (My second 'better than TSR' letter; again, I was quite flattered)

Angel of Death:

(Unfortunately through a computer mishap I've lost most of the mail I initially recieved about 'Angel', so there aren't as many quotes to choose from here, though I've actually recieved more feedback for it than my other work. Here's what I've still got, though, and it should give you a rough idea...)

"I find that I am truly enjoying your Forgotten Realms novel, "Angel of Death." The characterization and flow of the story are very enjoyable, and I can see how such a one as Athos could become as Entreri is. "

"great story, I'm a big Artemis fan, please send more quickly..."

"well, it's been long enough! I've been waiting months for the next series of chapters! But I accept your apoplogy, and I'm glad to see you're back on the internet. I hope the next chapters don't take as long - but I'm a fan (God help me) and I'll be checking your site often in hopes of seeing new chapters..."

"You've managed to create a stirring fantasy tragedy. Drizzt was a tragic figure in his own right, but he managed to rise above his circumstances. Artemis (Athos) is even more sympathetic in your story because we know he's going to fall..."

"action, romance, and an interesting story. This is a great read, I'm so glad you decided to share..."

"love Athos; hate the Viper; love Artemis. Makes for a story that won't let go... hope for more soon..."

"I really liked the tie-in with Zaknafien because the Viper's inability to defeat him mirrors his student's inability to defeat Drizzt, who in turn was trained by Zaknafien. The idea of the Viper creating a 2000 mile+ gauntlet of thieves, pirates and assassins for Athos to run seemed so in character for him... so riveting... I'm really looking forward to the next chapters and I will be checking your website every day until they are on. Thank you for providing a great read!"

So, in conclusion, don't ever think your letters mean nothing to me - I take great pride in your compliments and comments, and often they are a source of inspiration and optimism that motivates my work ethic. :) So if you've finished one of my chapters and you're thinking 'wow, that was great. I'd write and tell him but I'm sure he doesn't care what I think, and there're probably a whole bunch of other people writing him and saying the same thing' - go ahead and write. There have actually been two occasions when I've posted new chapters to a novel and recieved absolutely no feedback - even though I know I've got an audience that reads them... probably because everybody just assumed someone else would write. And while mentally I tell myself 'they liked it fine, they're still into it' there is this whispering voice deep down saying 'but maybe they didn't... maybe they're not into it anymore... maybe you've lost your audience!'

So drop me a line, as I'm very insecure sometimes. (Hey, in real life I'm a professional actor; we're supposed to be insecure, it's part of the stereotype! :)
